DESCRIPTION:

Bridge design for conventional construction and design for ABC share many similarities, but there are some key differences.  The design of bridges built using large-scale prefabrication is not specifically covered in the AASHTO LRFD Specifications. For prefabricated systems, it is possible that the stages of construction may in fact provide the critical load combinations. Supplemental requirements are therefore incorporated for ABC construction phase loadings, erection analysis, constructability checks and for the design of connections. Proper fit up requires geometry control and meeting element tolerances that are realistic and achievable. Heavy bridge moves introduce lifting stresses, dynamic effects, braking loads and also twist and deflection that have the potential to cause damage to the structure. The presentation will review and highlight the important considerations for ABC design that the presenter has been able to draw from his involvement in several ABC projects.

PRESENTERS:

Bala Sivakumar -- Vice President / Director of Special Bridge Projects with HNTB has more than 33 years of experience in bridge engineering. Bala serves as HNTB’s National Director for ABC projects and has been involved in a wide range of ABC projects. Bala was the co-principal investigator of the SHRP2 Project R04, “Innovative Bridge Designs for Rapid Renewal”. This six-year program developed national ABC standards, guidelines for design drawings, guidelines for erection systems, and LRFD design and construction specifications for the implementation of ABC. Bala was the lead developer of the ABC Toolkit published by TRB in 2012. He has conducted several ABC workshops and training seminars for DOTs and industry organizations. He is currently involved in ABC projects in ten states.
