...Living a Month in Poverty
Most people in our society are so busy with their own lives and
activities that they don’t have time to consider the plight of the
millions of our fellow citizens who struggle daily with providing
just the basics for themselves and their families.
Many work more than one job to try to make ends meet. Others, because of age and/or disabilities, try to survive on very limited,
fixed income and live in dread that some unexpected expense
will force them to choose between food, medicine or rent.
Poverty Simulation 2017 allows indiviuals to personally experience what it's like to "walk a month" in the shoes of someone who is facing poverty. A scenario driven simulation facilitated by the Texas Health and Human Services, Dept. of Family and Protective Services, it
thoroughly immerses participants in the reality of the day-to-day challenges that so many low income individuals and families face.
It is profoundly moving and interactive event.
By providing the opportunity for people to participate in this simulation, the UTMB Sealy Center on Aging’s RSVP Volunteer Program hopes
to raise awareness of these issues and give people the chance to get involved through volunteer work if they want to help those who are in such desperate need.
Poverty Simulation 2017 is an excellent educational and strategic
mapping tool.
