Implementing the Early English Language Development Standards (E-ELD) for Children 2.5 to 5.5 years old

Module 2

Course Description:  The WIDA Early English Language Development Standards (E-ELD) were specifically developed to help support the unique language needs of Dual Language Learners (DLLs), ages 2.5-5.5 years of age, who are in the process of learning more than one language prior to Kindergarten entry.  As language learning occurs across all areas of standards-based curricula, it is critical that early childhood programs use language standards in conjunction with Early Learning Standards when supporting, instructing, and assessing DLLs.  This course, second in a series of three modules, addresses the importance of home language, school readiness, socio-cultural contexts, and developmentally appropriate academic language.  Participants will learn how to integrate the E-ELD with EEC Standards into a play based curriculum that supports DLL’s language development. Prerequisite:  This is part 2 of a 3 part series.

Participants must have completed Introduction to the WIDA Early English Language Development (E-ELD) Standards, 2.5-5.5 years old - Module 1.

Course Objectives:
1. Describe language domains and the role in language development.
2. Share how language development connects with home language, literacy and school readiness.
3.  Explain the concept of socio-cultural context and how it relates to developmentally appropriate academic language.
4. Discuss use of language supports in a play based curriculum.
5. Use the E-ELD Standards in conjunction with the Massachusetts Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences to inform instruction.
