About the course
Flying in the mountains is very challenging, particularly for general aviation aircraft. Aircraft performance, mountain weather phenomena, and elevated density altitudes all present their challenges. To safely fly in the mountains, a solid mountain flying ground school is a prerequisite.
The ground school is very comprehensive. It covers:
This course is designed to be the first part of a full Mountain Flying Course. The second part is a flight in an aircraft through the mountains to Granby, Glenwood Springs, Leadville and back to Denver.
What to Bring:
The mountain flight will be without GPS, using basic pilotage and dead reckoning skills.
Cost of the course is $160 (includes course binder & lunch).
Tim Sale has been flying in the Rockies for almost 40 years. His first mountain experience was in a Piper J-3 Cub. The J-3 Cub is grossly underpowered and flying one in the mountains takes a lot of skill.
Tim’s students come from all over the USA and Canada to learn how to fly in the Rockies. Tim’s approach is to teach pilots how to safely fly in the mountains, not just over them. Tim will develop your skills on how to extract the maximum performance from your aircraft and use the terrain conditions in the mountains to greatest effect
Mountain flights can be scheduled with Tim after the course. Participants are welcome to schedule Alliance Flight Training’s aircraft or use their own aircraft for the flight portion.
