Module 3

Implementing the Early English Language Development Standards (E-ELD) for Children 2.5 to 5.5 years old

Advanced/ Supervisory

Course Description:  Early childhood programs often serve children and families who are ethnically and linguistically diverse.  It is important to establish a program culture that is accepting, respectful, and knowledgeable about how to support all children and families in the program. This training is intended for administrators who have completed the Early English Language Development Standards, Modules 1 and 2.  In this module, we will (1) review dual language learner (DLL) development and its impact on early childhood programs; (2) reflect on current program practices in relation to supporting DLLs and their families, (3) including communication with families regarding school readiness; (4) explore the WIDA Performance Definitions to assist staff in curriculum planning and support of DLL; and (5) discuss the importance of developing a language policy for their programs.

Prerequisite:  This is part 3 of a 3-part series.  Participants must have completed Introduction to the WIDA Early English Language Development (E-ELD) Standards, 2.5-5.5 years old - Module 1 and Implementing the WIDA Early English Language Development (E-ELD) Standards, 2.5-5.5 years old – Module 2.  Designed for supervisors and administrators supporting educators in early childhood settings.

Course Objectives:
1. Utilize knowledge of dual language development to support educators working with dual language learners and families.  Including stages of development, the role of home language, school readiness, and developmentally appropriate practice.
2. Continually reflect and evaluate the culture of the program to determine how the program welcomes and supports dual language learners and their families.
3. Use the WIDA Performance Definitions as a resource to support staff in implementation of curriculum and support of DLL children.
4. Communicate with families with consideration of the sociocultural context.
Develop and maintain a language policy for their programs, including policies and procedures around acceptance, support, family involvement, and development of staff cultural competence.
