Saturday Gardening Series 2017
Please join us for SGS 2017. With two full days of informative gardening presentations, the Saturday Gardening Series is a sure harbinger of Spring.
The cost is $60 for both days or $37.50 for one day.
As a profesional gardener, Carol Chernega is passionate about two things: pruning and English gardens. She explores these topics in her lectures and writing, and they formed the focus of her garden maintenance business, One Garden at a Time, based in Murrysville, PA. Her interest in English gardens peaked when she won a grant to work for two months in Jane Austen’s garden in Chawton, England. Living and working in the countryside that inspired Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice helped Carol understand the way the British approach gardening. Carol has produced a DVD: Pruning Shrubs with Your Personal Gardener, which will be available during her lecture. Carol’s been published in a variety of magazines including Pennsylvania Gardener and National Wildlife, and she is the author of A Dream House: Exploring the Literary Homes of England. Carol also has several gardening booklets available on Amazon’s Kindle.Carol will speak to us on How to Design an English Garden. She will review the elements of an English garden and demonstrate how to add the proper English touch to yours. In the afternoon she will focus on Pruning Shrubs, sharing tips on how to prune, best pruning tools and how to make the right cuts so plants are healthy and beautiful.
Bill Zawiski has been employed by the Ohio EPA since 1989, serving in the Division of Surface Water. Currently he is the supervisor of the Water Quality Group in the Ohio EPA Northeast District office. Bill received both a BS and MS in Biology from the University of Akron. As a lifelong Lake Erie watershed resident born in Cleveland, and later moving to Middleburg Heights, he grew up going to every nursery in Northeast Ohio with his parents who were avid gardeners. He has three children (two out of the house) and way too many pets!
Bill will talk to us about Lake Erie, Our Watery Friend to the North, which is our area's greatest freshwater asset. This presentation will discuss water quality in the context of a watershed concept, how we interact with Lake Erie, how we influence water quality, and some things we can do to help protect this jewel. Basic information on Lake Erie and water quality will be included to help us understand why we should care about our friend to the north.
Lisa Pfeife
r is the Educational Program Manager for the Agricultural Safety and Health Program at The Ohio State University. She does Extension outreach and education across the state with that program, also covering the areas of safety as they relate to Agricultural Rescue and Emergency Management. Part of her appointment is spent working with the grant-funded program, Ohio AgrAbility. It is a U.S.D.A. grant in which The Ohio State University partners with Easter Seals to assist people with disabilities employed in agriculture, providing practical education and assistance that promotes independence in agricultural production and rural living. Currently residing in Columbus, Lisa grew up in Crawford County where her family still runs a farming operation she once actively managed.
Lisa will present on Gardening as We Age. As we age, our desire to connect with our world through gardening does not diminish, even though our energy, ability and flexibility may. This presentation will take a look at body mechanics, lifting techniques and ergonomic tools that can help combat some of the muscle pain, injuries, and fatigue associated with a long day in the garden.
March 11th Presentations
John Niebel is a lifetime resident of Stark County. His gardening interest began as early as five years old and has been his lifelong passion. John has been a nationally known real estate instructor for over 45 years, a Sunday school teacher, football coach and official. A current Master Gardener Volunteer, he has 20 years experience assisting nursery customers with their landscape design projects. John takes delight in sharing the joy of gardening with adults and children, now working in local community gardens and with a prison agricultural program for teenage inmates.
John's topic is Drip Irrigation for Your Home Made Easy! He will share pointers on how to successfully and inexpensively install a drip irrigation system for your patio, deck or gardens. A workshop area will be provided at the end of the presenation for some hands-on experience.
Donniella Winchell is currently the Executive Director of the Ohio Wine Producers Association and chair of their Vintage Ohio wine festival. She chairs the Wine America State Advisory Committee, is active in Winegrape Growers of America and the Ohio Travel Association, and serves on a number of state and national committees. Doniella has contributed to several national wine publications, writes a regional weekly wine newspaper column, authors a marketing e-letter called Tuesday Tidbits, and is a frequent presenter at wine and tourism conferences. Winchell graduated with a BA in history from Allegheny College then taught in Ohio public schools before retiring to raise a family. She has been Executive Director of Ohio Wine Producers Association for over 25 years.

Ashley Kulhanek is the Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Educator in Medina County focusing on teaching insect-related programs to the public and Master Gardener Volunteers. She earned her Masters of Science from Ohio State University in Entomology where her thesis focused on phenology and the OSU Phenology Network.Ashley will present Using Phenology in the Landscape. Phenology, the study of recurring biological events and their relationship to the weather, is an old science with current day applications. Learn how phenology can help you plan gardens for season-long interest, plant season-long food sources for bees, and to help predict pests in the landscape before they balloon into damaging problems.
Eric Barrett is an Assistant Professor and the OSU Extension Educator in Mahoning County. He completed a degree in Animal Sciences at Ohio State University and stayed to earn an MS degree in Agricultural Economics. His specialization is direct marketing and local foods. Eric also works extensively with horticultural programs and with Master Gardener Volunteers. His specialization in horticulture is offering simple solutions to improve the garden and reduce disease. He is also a near-expert on hydrangeas. Eric regularly presents at state and national conferences, including workshops in Buffalo, Nashville, Kansas City, Charleston, SC, Las Vegas, Portland and beyond. He has received several teaching awards, a local tourism award, an Ohio Fair Association Award and the OSU Extension State Achievement Award. Eric grew up on his family’s dairy farm in Vincent, Ohio, where his family still raises grass fed beef, grows pumpkins and berries, and manages fall agritourism activities.
