About the Winemaker

Matt Deller is one of New Zealand’s most respected wine professionals, with 20 years experience in winemaking, importing, buying, writing and education.

He was first invited to judge New Zealand’s esteemed1994 Royal Easter Show Wine Awards at just 19 years old.In 1998, at 24 years of age, he was the youngest person globallyto pass Master of Wine practical exam. He recently re-entered the MW programme, passed the Theory exam on first sitting and will likely be a Master of Wine in 2016.

Prior to Constellation, Matt was the Wine Programme Director for the Fine Wine Delivery Company, New Zealand’s largest fine wine retailer. For eleven years prior to that he co-owned and managed a highly respected wine agency and boutique winemaking company, Bennett & Deller Wine Ltd.During that time he was also a highlyregarded wine writer and educator, presenting hundreds of tastings and seminars throughout the world.

Now, he works with the Kim Crawford and Nobilo winemaking teams during the New Zealand harvest each year and travels throughout USA & Canada providing unique perspective on our vineyards and wineries in an educational and entertaining fashion.

The youngest person in the world to pass the Master of Wine Practical exam in 1998, Matt Deller has since become one of New Zealand’s most celebrated wine professionals.  Indeed, he has more than 20 years’ experience in winemaking, importing, buying, writing and education.

This "by invitation only" event takes place in one of the hotel’s splendidly restored salons on Tuesday, August 25, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.  It includes a reception with exquisite hors d'oeuvres and a four-course gourmet dinner – all paired with Kim Crawford and Nobilo wines.

Adolphus Executive Chef Marcus Strietzel will draw on his world travels to create an evening reminiscent of the charming summer parties hosted in New Zealand's fabled wine growing regions.

Matt Deller will walk you through his fascinating wine career and share his insight into the New Zealand wine industry, course by course – what make the wines unique and why they are hailed the world over.  You’ll come away with a new appreciation for “God’s Own Country” and a culinary memory to last a lifetime.
