Maine Association for Marriage & Family Therapy Fall Conference

Haraseeket Inn, Freeport, ME
Friday, November 6th, 0900 - 16000900 - 1600
(9am-4pm for civilians)

With a period of persistent conflict following September 11, 2001, the United States has sent almost one and half million men and women overseas to engage in various forms of war and peace. The mental health needs of the current military, Veterans, and just as importantly if not more so, their families, are more vital than ever. This presentation will give the participants an opportunity to understand better the unique culture of military service, the needs of Veterans and their families, and the typical challenges faced by a civilian therapist providing therapy with this population. Focus of sessions will be developing a therapeutic alliance with a veteran, the presentation of PTSD, the impact of combat trauma on the family, relationship distress with a spouse or intimate partner with PTSD, common themes in therapy, and services available to combat Veterans and their families; all from a systemic perspective.

Rick Hendricks, MA, LMFT, retired from the U.S. Army as a Sergeant Major in the Army Chaplain Corps in March 2011 after 27 plus years of service. He completed his internship and practicum in Virginia using neurofeedback to supplement the couples and family work. He was an associate and licensed in Kentucky while still serving on active duty.

Upon retiring, Rick began working as an LMFT in private practice. As a therapist, Rick has worked doing intensive in-home family therapy with at-risk adolescents and their parents as a PRN therapist in Community Mental Health and served as the Director of an Employee Assistance Program for a local Fire Department. He served as Secretary to the board of directors for the Kentucky Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

In 2012, He secured a position with Department of Veterans Affairs at the Springfield (Massachusetts) Veteran Outreach Center as a Readjustment Counseling Therapist working with combat veterans and their families. He is currently serving as the President for the Massachusetts Division of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Rick earned his Associates degree in Pre-theology from Bethany Lutheran College, a Bachelor of Science (Summa Cum Laude) in Human Development from Southern Christian University, a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy (Summa Cum Laude) from Amridge University, and has completed 75 semester hours toward a Masters of Divinity from Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary.
