GW Center for Law, Economics, and Finance presents:

2016 Manuel F. Cohen Memorial Lecture:
The Role of the CFTC in the Market

On Thursday, February 4th from 8:30am to 1:30pm GW’s Center for Law, Economics, and Finance will hold a symposium titled The Role of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in the Market with a special keynote address by Commissioner Sharon Y. Bowen.  Commissioner Bowen will deliver the 2016 Manuel F. Cohen Memorial Lecture, which recognizes a leader in some area of securities law, public accounting, investment or business.

The CFTC is a pivotal federal regulatory body that protects the public from fraud, manipulation, and abusive practices related to derivatives and other products that are subject to the Commodity Exchange Act.  Before Commissioner Bowen’s keynote, there will be two panels of national experts that will discuss: (1) the CFTC’s role, if any, in the regulation of corporate governance matters, and (2) key concerns surrounding systemic risk related to the instruments and entities impacted by the CFTC.
