Mini-Symposium and Tour Day

(post Dressing Global Bodies conference)

Although the Royal Alberta Museum is closed for renovations, we will be holding our morning meeting  in the theatre there for a look at special pieces from their collection. After enjoying a box lunch we will depart via provided transportation to the Ukranian Culture Heritage Village, a living history museum. Please join us for this special day in the beautiful city of Edmonton, Alberta.


Schedule:

8:45-9:15 Registration

9:15-12 Morning program at the Museum Theatre:

Slide tour: Highlights of the Costume Collection of the Western Canadian History program.  The collection houses over 25,000 articles of dress and domestic textiles related to life in Alberta.

Paper: Hutterite Samplers and Embroidered Calligraphy, Lucie Heins, assistant curator Western Canadian History.

Coffee break

Paper: An introduction to Ukrainian textiles in Alberta, Larisa Cheladyn. Slide presentation of costuming and household textiles, with some reference to religious and other unique items will be the preparation for our afternoon tour.

11:30-1:00 Catered lunch at the museum. Have your lunch in the sunny theatre lobby or outdoors in the museum’s park-like setting above the North Saskatchewan River valley.

1:30 Transportation to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, a 160-acre living history museum tracing the history of Ukrainian settlement in east central Alberta. Enjoy a one-hour tour by costume curators Joy Schellenberg and Becky Dahl. Participants will have one hour on their own at the Village before travelling back to Edmonton.

International Conference

Dressing Global Bodies: 

Clothing Cultures, Politics and Economies in Globalizing Eras, c. 1600s-1900s  

July 7-9, 2016 (Thursday-Saturday) 

University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada
Co-Organized with the Pasold Research Fund, UK
Western Region CSA is a sponsoring organization

 This international conference will showcase new historical research on the centrality of dress in global, colonial and post-colonial engagements, emphasizing entangled histories, comparative and cross-cultural analyses. This scholarship redefines national and collective communities, in the practice of fashion and the dynamics of re-fashioning and re-use, from the seventeenth through the twentieth century.

 One hundred and thirty five papers will be presented in parallel sessions over three days. Presenters will come from 18 countries including Canada, the United States, Israel, United Kingdom, India, Ghana, Macaw, Japan, Denmark, Australia, Italy, France, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Nigeria, Sweden and Algeria. Our US colleagues will present 43 papers and five of those will be by Western Region CSA Members.

There are three keynote speakers:

         “World Time and Chinese Fashions during the Maoist Era”

Karen Tranberg Hansen, Northwestern University
          "Global Fashion Encounters & Africa: Affective Materialities in Zambia”

Dana Leibsohn, Smith College
           “Colonial Cosmopolitan: Dressing Up in Spanish America”
