Come on a 10 Day Guatemalan Adventure with the

Kateri Tekakwitha Fund.

Where will I go? What will I do?    What will I see?

Sunday, February 22nd, your trip will begin when you are picked up in Guatemala City and transported to the Hotel Casa Antigua in historical Antigua Guatemala, the colonial capital of all of New Spain.  You will  have time to settle in before lunch at the Fonda de la Calle Real, a converted colonial home,  next to the .hotel.  After lunch the Kateri Fund staff will join us for a trip orientation and a few words about their work in Guatemala.   Click for  pictures of hotel .

On Monday, after breakfast in the hotel garden (see picture at right) we will travel by van to Guatemala City.  In the morning we will visit the Museo Ixchel which celebrates Indigenous music, culture, and dress.  After a box lunch in the patio between the museums, we will visit the Museo Pop Vuh which has exhibits on Mayan History and make our own ceramic stamps in Mayan designs.   We will return to Antigua for the night at the Hotel Casa Antigua.

On Tuesday, we will travel by van to Tecpan Guatemala to visit the village of three of our former students with a possible stop at the school where Myrna Santelel, one of our graduates teaches. At one of our stops, we will make cascarones used for the traditional carnival celebration at the start of Lent.   Time permiting, we will visit the Mayan ruins, Iximche.   Lunch will be in a local restaurant.  We will travel  in the late afternoon to Pananjachel where we will stay at the Hotel Utz Jay meaning a good place in Kaquichel. On Wednesday, we will travel by boat across Lake Atitlan to San Juan la Laguna to visit a weaving cooperative affiliated with Mayan Traditions.  Back in Panajachel, we will visit the herbal medicine gardens at  the Mayan Traditions office, enjoy a cup of herbal tea, and lunch in their garden,  After lunch we will shop in their store stocked with textiles from their women's groups.  We will return to the Hotel Utz Jay in Panajachel with the evening again free for dinner and exploring.

On Thursday, we will travel from Panajachel to Santa Clara la Laguna and visit with the Mujeres Clarenses, our project there.  We will lunch with young women who are graduates of our program and have a chance to talk with them about what they are doing now.   In the afternoon, we will return to Pananjachel to the Hotel Utz Jay.  The evening will be free to explore the restaurants and handicraft shops in Panajachel.

Friday, we will return to the Hotel Casa Antigua in Antigua.  En route we will visit our project in Chumanzana and learn to make tortillas from the women, visit their gardens, and hear about their project.

On Saturday, we will have a historical tour of Antigua with Don Roberto Aquari in the morning and in the afternoon go to Azotea for a visit to a coffee finca and music museum.

On Sunday we will again be guided by Don Roberto Squari, an Antigua native, who will introduce us to the world renowned Antigua Lenten traditions.  We will have lunch together and the afternoon will be free to explore..

On Monday, we will visit the Choco Museo and learn how chocolate is made. We will make our own chocolate bar under the direction of the chief candy maker at the museum.  The afternoon wil be free to do last minute shopping and prepare for our Farewell Dinner at the Posada Don Rodrigo with marimba music and dance.

On Tuesday, we will transfer to the airport to return home with many fond memories.

Price of Trip is $2000 This includes a room, double occupancy for the 9 nights of the trip, all transportation, welcoming orientation, breakfast and lunch each day, entrance fee to museums, farewell get together, and transportation to and from the airport.  Airfare and evening meals other than those mentioned above will be on your own.

A $500 donation to the Kateri Fund is included in the price.  Angel donors of the Kateri Fund are eligible for a $100 discount.  A non-refundable deposit of $500 is due by Dec. 1, 2014 to reserve a place.  Final payment is due by Feb. 1, 2015.
