CSUF Student Professional Dinner 3/20/14

The Southern California Chapter of ASPA in partnership with the California State University, Fullerton Division of Politics, Administration & Justice, Master of Public Administration Program, and the Office of Government Relations is pleased to present its first student/professional networking event on the Fullerton campus.

Please join us for an evening of discussion with three Executives from Orange County to discuss the interjurisdictional, intersectorial, collaborative environment in which they make their careers.

David Cavazos, City Manager of Santa Ana

David Cavazos began serving as City Manager of Santa Ana, California in October 2013, with more than 25 years of public management experience. He encourages a team approach to problem solving and believes that solutions are achieved by working together.

Previously, Mr. Cavazos was the City Manager of Phoenix, Arizona where he began his career as an intern.  In his role as Phoenix City Manager, he trimmed the Phoenix budget, streamlined its permitting processes and helped revitalize its downtown.  Under his leadership, Phoenix successfully turned around a historic deficit into a surplus within two years and maintained a "AAA" bond rating during his tenure as City Manager.

Throughout his career, Mr. Cavazos has actively participated on non-profit boards for the Chamber of Commerce, local children's hospital and downtown civic organizations. His charitable work includes the following awards: United Cerebral Palsy of Arizona Champion for Life Award (2013), Arizona Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Award (2011), and the United States Arizona Small Business Advocate of the Year Award (2000).

Mr. Cavazos has a Master of Science degree in Management and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon Unviversity. He is a certified Economic Development Finance Professional of Urban and Economic Development (EDFP). He is an accredited Airport Executive by AAAE, the American Association of Airport Executives.

Mark Denny, Chief Operating Officer, County of Orange                                    Mark Denny serves as the first Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the County of Orange in the County CEO's office. The COO provides direct supervision over all appointed County agencies and departments, ensuring consistency in direction and aiding in the development of coordinated strategies to implement County goals.

Mr. Denny previously served as Director of Orange County Parks with responsibilities for developing and managing an annual budget in excess of $100 million. During his tenure, he facilitated the largest real estate transaction in Orange County history, the donation to the County of 20,000 acres of open space that was part of the historic Irvine Ranch. He first joined the County in February 2003, serving as Chief of Staff to then Third District Supervisor, Bill Campbell. His private sector management experience includes positions with Allergan, Inc., the American Watercraft Association and as a public affairs consultant.

A graduate of CSU, Fullerton with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, Mr. Denny currently serves as President of the National Assocation of County Park and Recreation Officials and represents the County on the Board of the Nature Reserve of Orange County, where he is the President and Executive Committee Chair.

Mr. Denny is also a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Counties. He is a graduate of the Orange County Sheriff's Level III Leadership Academy and the Orange County Leadership Academy.

She also served as the Cofiroute USA program manager for the 91 Express Lanes for seven years. Ms. Mittermeier is a recognized authority in strategic planning and organizational management.

Her more than 30 years of previous experience includes serving in various executive management positions in both government and private industries.  Her accomplishments include managing a $300 million expansion for the John Wayne Airport in Orange County and developing and implementing the workout plan that enabled the county of Orange to emerge from the biggest municipal bankruptcy in history just 18 months after she took over as county CEO.

Ms. Mittermeier has received accolades from numerous organizations, including the National Association of Business Owners, the League of Women Voters and the Women's League of America in honor of her professional accomplishments and expertise.  She has been named as one of Governing Magazine's National Public Officials of the Year, one of the Orange County Business Journal's Most Influential People in Orange County, granted the California State University, Long Beach Distinguished Alumnae Award, named 2009 Woman of the Year by the California State Legislature, and has been awarded a certificate of special congressional recognition.
