Science Café | Beacon
Science Café | Beacon is a newfangled and entertaining series of science-based events designed to identify and demystify the many roles of water in and around our daily lives. An extension of the Clarkson University Science Café Series that launched in the Potsdam area Fall 2009, Clarkson professors, scientists and other knowledgeable guests demonstrate, innovate and interact with Café-goers to create an informal forum for great fun and new ideas. Events will be held in popular bar/restaurants in Beacon, NY with the aim to fascinate regulars+ with topics from: “Beacon, NY: Where Engineers Order Their Water Straight Up” to a musical performance keyed to real-time water data by “the mad scientist of dancefloor jazz” (CMJ) Ben Neill and dream pop vocalist Mimi Goese.

Oysters are brilliant, and Billion Oyster Project (BOP) Co-Founder Murray Fisher will be the first to tell you it has nothing to do with shiny pearls.
In Henry Hudson’s day, oysters were among the brightest ecosystem ‘engineers’ on the planet: Trillions of oysters kept New York Harbor spic and span by filtering every drop of water daily; 220,000 acres of reefs provided marine habitat and kept storm waves at bay.
Since 2011, BOP has planted 16.5 million oysters in NY Harbor with the help of over one hundred partners and thousands of kids. The stories and science of BOP’s mix of education and restoration will frame an evening of unexpected laughs and breed new respect for oysters and educators. Come buy a beer, slurp a few oysters (not from NY Harbor!) and hear how the Billion Oyster Project is putting oysters back to work. The Hop Bar/Restaurant, 554 Main Street, Beacon.
