"It Takes A Village" Keeping Kids Safe In Our Community
The Conference is designed to offer quality training and education on topics of interest to leaders in child abuse prevention: social workers, counselors, educators, child care and youth workers, law enforcement personnel, medical & legal professionals, parents, foster parents, board volunteers, elected officials, and other interested child advocates. Participants may attend their choice of a variety of workshops on child abuse and neglect prevention. Participants may choose to attend one or both days. This conference includes a complimentary continental breakfast and lunch (vegetarian options will be available).
- All workshops are approved trainings for FRYSC and Foster Parents.
- Please select ONLY one morning and one afternoon session per day of attendance. Also please select if you would like breakfast and/or lunch.
Workshop Descriptions
- Darkness to Light: A sexual abuse prevention training intended to educate adults regarding the prevalence of sexual abuse and how to prevent, recongize and react responsibly.
- 4 Your Child: Dads Making the Difference: This workshop will review the indication between father involvement and child well-being, and how the 4 Your Child program assists non-custodial fathers in increasing thier capacity for active and engaged fathering.
- Preventing Human Trafficking in Our Community: This workshop aims to offer educational information on Human Trafficking and offer tools for all citizens to use in their community to keep themselves or their children from becoming victims.
- Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse: Bruising is common in childhood; however bruising is the most frequent overlooked sign of physical abuse. Recognizing of suspicious injuries and reporting to investigation agencie is key to prevent future abuse. This workshop will utilize case studies to help participants recognize concerning patterns for physical abuse, injury mechanisms and the steps to report to investigative agencies. It will also discuss adverse childhood experiences and the lifelong impact that physical abuse can have on children.
- Parenting Teens: This workshop will provide education about warning signs and triggers to potential problems with teens and finding motivation and encouraging change in adolescents. Topics covered will include bullying, cutting, social media, substance abuse, etc.
- Neglect- The Effects on Children: Neglect is the most common form of child maltreatment and is most often associated with fatalities and near fatalities. This workshop will describe and examine medical indicators of various forms of neglect, common risk factors and dynamics associated with neglect and assessment strategies utilized in mecial assessment. This workshop will utilize case scenarios and photographs as learning tools. (Child Care Providers training approved)
- Suspicious Injuries in Children: This workshop will cover the recognition, documentation and interpretation of physical injuries as well as natural disease that mimic abusive trauma.
- The Relationship Between Domestic Violence and Child Abuse: This workshop will explore how domestive violence impacts child abuse directly and indirectly.
- Corporal Punishment: Research, Attitudes and Alternatives: This workshop will review current research regarding the impact of corporal punishment and acknowledge the difficulties in changing attitudes toward corporal punishment. Alternative forms of discipline and progressive programs addressing corporal punishment will be introduced.
- Child Development 0-5 and Red Flags: This training has been approved for 3.0 CEUs with SW, Psychology, LMFT and LPC. In this course participants will learn the basics of normal and abnormal development in children ages 0-5 years across several developmental areas including motor, language, social emotional, and cognitive. Participants will have a basic understaning of where to refer children in the age range for ongoing services to treat delays. (Child Care Providers training approved)
- Adverse Childhood Events: Toxic Stress and Resiliency: This workshop reviews how adverse experiences in childhood impair social functioning, reduce indicators of well-being and increase biomedical disease.
- The Effects of Substance Abuse on Children: This presentation provides a look at the effects of parental substance use on infants and toddlers. We will explore the risk to children whose parent(s) or caregivers use or abuse substances. This includes both illicit drug use and prescription drug misuse. We will also explore the effects and risks to children living in an environment where drugs are produced and/or used as in the case of methamphetamine. (Child Care Providers training approved)
- Grandmothers helping Grandmothers: Working Effectively with the Child Welfare System: Kitchen table conversations, a relative caregiver support group, will offer practical hints for grandparents who are working with the child welfare and family court in raising children whose parents cannot do so. Workshop will be based off participants questions and guidance from U.S. Children's Bureau. Handouts provided.
- Internet Crimes Against Children: Kentucky Trends: At any one time in Kentucky, there are thousands of individuals searching for online pornography. The vast majority are, or will become "hands on" offenders. This presentation will provide an overview of internet crimes committed against Kentucky's children. Lieutenant Murrell will utilize Kentucky cases invistigated by the Kentucky State Police Electronic Crimes Branch to educate participants on current trends in Kentucky. Participants will learn to recognize, prevent and report online predator behavior.
