The focus of the 22nd Annual Breakfast is Crushed to Wisdom: Finding Promise in Our Failures. Dr. Scarborough will discuss the proper response to failure and how it can lead to personal growth and professional success. Scott L. Scarborough became the 16th president of The University of Akron on July 1, 2014.
He had previously served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at The University of Toledo since 2012. Scarborough was UT’s chief academic and operating officer, responsible for 12 colleges and the divisions that managed student affairs, enrollment management, libraries, registrar’s office and the university teaching center. He directed the development of a new five-year strategic plan for the main campus, and emphasized such strategic priorities as ensuring academic quality, enhancing academic distinction and improving the student experience.
From 2010-2012, Scarborough led The University of Toledo Medical Center as senior vice president and executive director. During his tenure the medical center won the Press Ganey "National Success Story of the Year Award" and was named "Best Hospital in the Region" by U.S. News & World Report. The center also experienced its best Joint Commission accreditation survey during that time.
Before joining Toledo, Scarborough served as executive vice president at DePaul University with oversight of operational divisions ranging from human resources to information technology to student affairs. Prior to DePaul, Scarborough also served as: CEO of the Texas Treasury Safekeeping Trust Co.; vice president for business affairs at The University of Texas at Tyler; and an audit manager and interim director of Employee Group Insurance for The University of Texas System.
Scarborough earned a Ph.D. in strategic management from The University of Texas at Arlington, an MBA from The University of Texas at Tyler, and a BBA in accounting from The University of Texas at Austin.
In his free time, he enjoys reading, golf, tennis, college sports and family activities. Scarborough and his wife, Tammy, have two children.
