Voices Set Free - Introduction to Childhood Domestic Violence

Presented by: Sarina Rodrigues Saturn, Ph.D.                                  & Louise Bauschard, LCSW

Voices Set Free is presenting an Introduction to Childhood Domestic Violence.  These workshops are aimed at people who are engaged with children and/or adults who were impacted by Childhood Domestic Violence (CDV).  CDV happens when a child grows up in a home where violence between their parents or violence of one parent towards the other is prevalent.  The workshop will bring to light the key question of Domestic Violence that is often overlooked and misunderstood by both professionals and community alike: What happens to the child who lives with Domestic Violence?

We will cover:

What Childhood Domestic Violence is.

Making the connection between CDV and Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE's)

Viewing the film "The Children Next Door"

How experiencing Childhood Domestic Violence negatively "wires" a developing brain, encoding a series of negative beliefs which can last well into adulthood and adversely affect 4 key areas of one's life: physical health, mental health, behavior, and relationships.

About the Presenters:

Sarina Rodrigues Saturn, Ph.D is a professor at the University of Portland.  Her area of expertise is shedding light on how emotions are mapped onto the brain.  Her dissertation focused on molecular, cellular, and behavioral studies of the amygdala, the key brain structure for emotional processing.  Sarina's research has been featured in the New York Times, Science Friday on NPR, and other media outlets.

Louise Bauschard, LCSW, is the Executive Director and founder of the nonprofit organization Voices Set Free. Louise is a nationally recognized domestic violence rights activist.  During her long career she has acquired expertise and skills helping people navigate the criminal justice system.  Louise is a collaborator and partner in many settings.  She will present an overview of the Childhood Domestic Violence work now underway.
