Description of Preconference Sessions Available
Special Education Compliance and Procedures (morning session)
Facilitators: Jacki Russell, Director of Policy, WCPSS Special Education Services AND Carol Ann Hudgens, Section Chief for NC DPI Policy, Monitoring and Audit Section
Ensuring that state and federal policy is implemented compliantly is a responsibility and a privilege for all who support students with disabilities. This half day training will offer information and strategies to support compliant processes including Child Find obligations, IEP development, reevaluation processes, developing a well written Prior Written Notice, strategies for obtaining parental consent, processes to follow when parents revoke consent, requests for Independent Educational Evaluations, and Dispute Resolution options. This interactive training will support all who serve special education students in deepening knowledge regarding compliance with requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Anytime you spend in gaining a deeper understanding of special education policy will help you gain skills in improving compliance in your work to support students with disabilities. This training would benefit teachers, administrators and teacher educators. (1/2 CEU)
Addressing Indicator 13 Requirements and Cultural Diversity in the Individualized Transition Plan (morning session)
Facilitator: Allison Jones, PhD, Special Education Professor, University of North Carolina Wilmington
This half day session will respond to the needs of special educators and administrators at the secondary level by identifying a user friendly process that can be used to develop culturally responsive transition plans that also address the Indicator 13 requirements. Session participants will become familiar with each step of the process as well as brainstorm additional ways to address the unique and diverse needs of students with disabilities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in constructing a comprehensive transition plan. Autism Spectrum Disorders (morning session)
Facilitators: Malinda Pennington, NCSU Doctoral Student and EC Program Specialist, Wilson ASD Academy, AND Stephanie Shaw, Coordinating Teacher for Low Incidence Programming, Wake County Public School System/SpEd Services
This half day session will provide an overview of theories, instructional strategies and interventions related to academic and social skill supports appropriate for students with ASD. We will review evidence-based instructional strategies designed to meet the varied needs of learners with ASD. These strategies will promote active learner engagement by making learning exciting and relevant for students; suggestions for the development and/or assessment of effective collaborative relationships and service delivery programs will also be addressed. (1/2 CEU)
Instructional Technology (afternoon session)
Facilitator: Mellissa Stopa, NCSU Doctoral Candidate and Technology Specialist, Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools
This half day session will provide an overview of core technology components and technology based practices as well as information related to how practitioners can adopt and adapt technology for individuals with varied learning needs. Participants will learn about common instructional technology methods that can be applied across various academic disciplines and grade levels. These effective strategies (e.g., web-based lessons, WebQuests, CyberGuides, Web 2.0 tools, Google Aps, etc.) can be used to assist in developing technology-rich lessons, and they can be continuously modified as needed. Early Childhood (afternoon session)
Facilitators: Amanda Bock, PhD, Special Education Professor, William Peace University AND Gay Lytton, Director of Preschool Programs, Office of Early Learning, Wake County Public Schools
This half day session will provide participants with a review evidence-based instructional strategies designed to meet the varied needs of early childhood learners. These developmentally appropriate support strategies will promote active learner engagement by making learning exciting and relevant; suggestions for the development and/or assessment of effective collaborative relationships and service delivery programs will also be addressed. Mental Heath (afternoon session)
Facilitator: Katie Proffit, PhD, Licensed Psychologist, HSP-P, WCPSS Psychologist
This half day training is designed to help educators, administrators, parents and other service providers better understand the mental health challenges of students with special needs and how to address those challenges on multiple levels. Participants will learn more about available mental health services in our state to provide quality support to achieve self-determination for special education students with mental illness and substance use disorders.
