Eating is a complex sensory-motor activity that requires coordination of numerous muscles and structures in the mouth, jaw and throat. Clinicians working with clients with oral motor and feeding problems must have a solid knowledge of the anatomy and functions of these structures in order to effectively assess and treat feeding problems. This webinar will discuss oral motor and related structures necessary for effective eating. The purpose of each structure as it relates to assessment and intervention will be presented. This webinar, Part 1 of a 2-part series, will focus on identification and understanding of these foundational structures. Part 2 of the series will discuss the typical development of oral motor and related structures, patterns and skills necessary to treatment plan and progress feeding interventions.

Teresa A. May-Benson, Sc.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, Executive Director of the Spiral Foundation, is a well-known lecturer and researcher on sensory integration. She has authored numerous book chapters and articles on praxis, ideation, and sensory integration and is a co-collaborator on development of the SAFE PLACE Program. She has extensive experience with children and adults with autism and a diverse clinical background having worked in private and public school settings as well as private practice. She is past Chairperson of the Sensory Integration Special Interest Section of the American Occupational Therapy Association. She is the recipient of the Virginia Scardinia Award of Excellence from AOTF, The Alice S. Bachman Award from Pediatric Therapy Network, and the Catherine Trombly Award from the Massachusetts Association of Occupational Therapy. Most recently, Dr. May-Benson presented at the MEDA Conference in Newton, Massachusetts; her presentation focused on occupational therapy assessment and treatment that takes into consideration the sensory, motor and psychosocial components related to individuals with ARFID.
