Many of India's population health challenges can in principle be addressed at current levels of health spending with existing services and technologies. However, fundamental behavioral and institutional obstacles (that transcend challenges of "implementation") often prevent large-scale health programs from realizing their potential. The overarching objective of this workshop is to begin creating a community of scholars and policymakers dedicated to documentation and synthesis of these challenges and to identification of potential solutions to them. In doing so, the workshop is envisioned to be the first in a series.
The inaugural workshop will be a private, closed-door forum that focuses on new, previously undocumented distinctions between public and private sector health service delivery (and hybrids of the two) in rural India. In doing so, it has three specific aims. First, it will provide new empirical evidence on sectoral differences, emphasizing areas in which this new evidence conflicts with popular perceptions. Second, it will discuss the implications of this evide nce for public policy with perspectives and reactions from policymakers playing a central role. Third, drawing on input from attendees, it will identify priorities for further study over the period between workshops and help to articulate the subsequent workshop's agenda. |
