Assessment/Treatment Strategies for Binge Eating Disorder (BED)

This psychologist-dietitian team from The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt will present a multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of binge eating disorder and other related eating disorders. Discussion will include the etiology of eating disorders, diagnostic criteria, effective assessment tools, psychological and dietary/nutrition concerns and effective multidisciplinary, evidence-based treatment options.

At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the diagnostic criteria for Binge Eating Disorder (BED);
  • Summarize nutritional concerns and long-term impact of BED;
  • Differentiate between BED and other feeding and eating disorders;
  • Outline co-occurring disorders in relationship to BED;
  • Develop effective assessment and treatment strategies for BED.

Featured Presenters:

Jennifer Moran, Psy.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist serving adolescents, adults and families in the outpatient department at the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt. She operates within an integrative approach with a special focus on cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness-based strategies. Dr. Moran served as a family therapist in conjunction with the Center's NIMH-funded research study on effective therapies for adolescents with anorexia nervosa and is certified as a family behavioral therapist through the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders.  

Samantha Lewandowski, MS, RD, LDN, is the nutritional care coordinator of outpatient services at the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt where she works one-on-one with patients and supervises the outpatient nutrition staff and coordinates nutrition-related programs within the outpatient department, including community outreach related to the Center's nutrition services.  Ms. Lewandowski has a variety of areas of expertise in clinical nutrition and a strong background in wellness and health promotion. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nutrition from the University of Delaware and her master’s degree in health promotion management from The American University.

Professional Continuing Education Credits:

An important message about Continuing Education Credits:  

Brook Lane seminars are approved for continuing education credits as an entire event.  PARTIAL CREDIT WILL NOT BE AWARDED.   To assure that you receive continuing education credit, you must be on time and complete the entire seminar.

Counselors/Therapists:  Brook Lane Health Services has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP TM) # 5452. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified.  Brook Lane solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.  This program will provide 3 clock hours; partial credit will not be awarded.

Social Workers:  Brook Lane Health Services is an approved sponsor of the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners for continuing education credits for licensed social workers in Maryland.  This program will provide 3.0 credit hours of Category I continuing education; partial credit will not be awarded.   

Psychologists:  The Maryland State Board of Examiners for Psychologists will accept continuing education hours provided by Brook Lane, an approved CE sponsor by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners.

Dietitians: The Commission on Dietetic Registration has reviewed and approved this Activity # 128786 for 3 CPEUs. CPE Level 2, CDR CPE Accredited Provider Code: MD002; Learning Codes: 2000, 3000, 3020, 4010.

Other Healthcare Professionals and Attendees:  A certificate of completion noting the number of educational/contact hours will be provided for other disciplines to allow attendees to apply for CE credit as an individual.
