Course Description:
Early childhood and school-age educators have a critical impact on the children and families they serve – their knowledge, behavior and attitudes affect children and families every day! This course will focus on a variety of issues confronting early childhood and school-age educators as they navigate situations that require them to behave in a professional manner. Participants will explore the requirements of being a mandated reporter, learn how to effectively resolve conflicts, and engage in discussions and activities that help them discover the elements of professional identity and ethical conduct.
Course Objectives:
Session 1: Developing Professionalism
1. Recognize the foundations of the early childhood profession including its historical, philosophical, and social foundations and how these foundations influence current thought and practice
2. Identify the diversity of the early childhood field
3. Identify community and professional supports for the early childhood professional
Session 2: Professional Ethics and Ethical Dilemmas
1. Recognize the value of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct as a tool to resolve basic ethical dilemmas in early childhood education
2. Understand the NAEYC Code of Ethics
3. Describe how to apply the NAEYC Code of Ethics and general ethical principles to their everyday work with children and families
4. Evaluate the ethical dilemmas in their jobs
