Dr. Nichols is an Associate Professor at Oregon State University’s College of Liberal Arts where he is Director of the OSU Citizenship & Crisis Initiative. Nichols specializes in the history of the United States and its relationship to the rest of the world, particularly in the areas of isolationism, internationalism, and globalization. In addition to his work on the intellectual history of the U.S. role in the world, Nichols is an expert on modern U.S. intellectual, cultural, and political history.
Nichols is a 2016 Andrew Carnegie Fellow, and has been honored as the Oregon State University Honors College Outstanding Professor of the Year. He has also received awards for service, scholarship, and teaching from several universities and professional societies. Nichols is a frequent commentator on foreign policy and politics and has authored or co-authored three books, and written numerous articles on the intersection between citizenship and crisis. Nichols is a permanent member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Oregon Historical Society.
