Carruthers & Roth, P.A. is pleased to announce our annual 2016 Business & Tax Seminar taking place on Wednesday, December 7, 2016. This full-day seminar, designed for CPAs, accounting and tax professionals, will focus on key issues, policies and requirements related to their profession.
Objectives
Upon completion of the 2016 Business & Tax Seminar, attendees will be able to:
- Assess the impact of mischaracterized independent contractors on Affordable Care Act compliance and penalties.
- Identify the changes and effects of the Department of Labor’s Final Rule (effective December 1, 2016) that expands overtime eligibility by raising the dollar threshold for qualification for White Collar Overtime Exemption.
- Summarize the “white collar” exemption for executive, administrative, and professional personnel.
- Distinguish between the “duties” tests and “salary” tests necessary to qualify for the “white collar” exemptions from the overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
- Identify key North Carolina state tax changes effective in 2016 and 2017 and recognize new tax planning opportunities for individuals and businesses arising from tax legislation.
- Identify federal tax developments over the last year and numerous tax issues and provisions impacting your client's or employer's tax returns.
- Recognize the critical relationships typically encountered during a business’s enterprise life cycle and identify ways to protect your client’s rights and interests in those relationships.
- Identify key issues associated with the new basis consistency rules under Treasury Regulation 6035, drafting and planning considerations in light of the Holiday and Purdue FLP cases, and address the net investment income tax’s impact on trust administration.
- Summarize recent changes in the areas of transfer tax, estate and trust administration.
- Recognize problem areas in the estate planning and administration context by reviewing illustrations of problems and pitfalls in celebrity plans (or lack thereof).
- Summarize the North Carolina Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act (“UDTPA”) and apply the three part-test for a Prima Facie Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act (“UDTPA”) claim.
- Provide general guidance on measures that clients can take to avoid Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act (“UDTPA”) claims.
- Provide a general framework for the analysis of purchase agreements and leases with a focus on risk management including analysis of specific types of provisions that affect transaction risks.
Recommended CPE Credit
8 CPE credits in Accounting, Taxes and Business Law fields of study.
