The Sonoran Institute, Arizona Community Foundation, and our partners are pleased to sponsor this free lunch, presentation, and dialogue about how the impacts of climate change will affect the Latino community in Arizona.
Many local civic and community leaders in Arizona's Latino community were surveyed about the impact of climate change upon their neighborhoods and what information and resources could assist them in effectively addressing climate impacts. The impacts of climate are anticipated to hit lower-income and disenfranchised communities more severely, including many Latino neighborhoods in our urban areas. We will present the survey findings along with an overview of projected climate change impacts in Arizona.
Following the presentations, presenters and participants will engage in a dialogue to explore effective next steps for the Sonoran Institute and our partners in working with the Latino community to increase preparedness and resources to help manage impacts of climate change. The Sonoran Institute has been developing tools and policies to assist communities in resilience planning for climate impacts - from drought and wildfire to health and urban heat island effects - for many years. We want to ensure that these will benefit Latino communities as well, and appreciate your input on how we can do that.
Health and air quality are linked to a changing climate. Air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels pose a significant risk to human health. Latinos in particular find themselves among some of the most impacted communities. According to the Center for Disease Control. Hispanic children are 60% more likely to have asthma, as compared to non-Hispanics.
