Mental Health America of Illinois Presents:

Ask, Advise, Refer:

Integrating Smoking Cessation into Practice

Presented by:

Emily Zadikoff, MPH, TTS

Research confirms that people with substance abuse addictions and/or mental health disorders face major health disparities related to tobacco use and consume 44% of cigarettes smoked in the U.S. People with serious mental illness die 25 years earlier due to chronic health conditions, many of which are directly related to tobacco use. Behavioral health providers play an integral role in implementing tobacco-free policies, offering tobacco education, and integrating tobacco treatment within existing services. Persons with mental health disorders and addictions not only urgently need these services, but also desire treatment. This training will cover trends and effects of tobacco use, evidence-based tobacco treatment, cessation pharmacotherapy, and how to implement the Ask, Advise, Refer brief intervention.

Objectives:

· Describe trends and issues regarding tobacco use

· Review treatment options in the management of tobacco cessation

· Explain current guidelines on tobacco cessation intervention

· Summarize appropriate tobacco cessation pharmacotherapy

· Incorporate the Ask Advise Refer tobacco cessation model into     practice

· Refer clients to local cessation resources and the Illinois Tobacco  Quitline

The cost for this workshop is $30.00. 2 CEUs are available for Social Workers and Professional Counselors. Discounted Parking ($16) is located at 20 E. Randolph (Macy’s Parking Garage).
