The Use of Art in Treatment: From an Art Therapy Perspective

Art has been a form of expression and communication since the beginning of time and mental health practitioners have been utilizing art making as a technique as early as the 1920’s. Jung described the use of mandalas in his clinical work, just as Freud discussed the projection of the psyche in the images we create. What’s the difference between the use of art by Jung, Freud, and other therapists, and Art Therapy as a Creative Arts Therapy discipline? This workshop will explore the ways in which art is used in treatment historically and currently, how Art Therapists view art making, and the basics of Art Therapy principles.  Art experientials will be provided.

Objectives:

1. Participants will learn the differentiation between the use of art in treatment and Art Therapy.

2. Participants will gain a basic knowledge of Art Therapy principles.

3. Participants will experientially explore creating art through   an Art Therapy lens.

The cost for this workshop is $30.00. 2 CEUs are available for Social Workers and Professional Counselors. Discounted Parking ($16) is located at 20 E. Randolph (Macy's Parking Garage).

About the Presenter:

Marni Rosen, Psy.D ATR is a practicing art therapist and clinical psychologist with the Institute for Therapy through the Arts. She earned her Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology: Art Therapy and her Doctorate Degree in Clinical Psychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago and completed her post doctorate fellowship at the Post Traumatic Stress Center in New Haven, CT. She specializes in trauma centered psychotherapy and the application of arts based treatments with trauma survivors. Dr. Rosen has also co-authored several published papers on Art Therapy, including "Adlerian Art Therapy with Survivors of Sexual Assault," Journal of Individual Psychology (2013) and was featured in the 2012 Gemeinschaftsgefuhl Magazine as the Alumnus Leading Change in the World.
