Mental Health America of Illinois Presents:

In Dogs We Trust: The Human-Canine Connection in Health and Wellness

Objectives:

  • Recognize the different types of dogs used as canine assistants for people with disabilities
  • Differentiate between emotional support animals (ESAs), comfort animals and assistance animals/service dogs and horses
  • Understand access laws regarding service animals, ESAs and comfort animals
  • Understand the elements of the human-animal bond as an adjunct to therapy and as a primary medical/psychological intervention
  • Recognize a “fake” service dog from one who meets national standards
  • Understand better how and when to recommend a service dog with particular emphasis on PTS, veterans and trauma recovery of all types, civilian and military 

The cost for this workshop is $30.00. 2 CEUs are available for Social Workers and Professional Counselors. Discounted parking ($16) is located at 20 E. Randolph (Macy's Parking Garage).

 

About the Presenter:

L.B. Lon Hodge, MA, MFA, EdD/ABD, PhD, is a social media and veteran intervention consultant for the Service Dog Assistance and Education Foundation, and a PTSD treatment and Veteran Suicide Prevention advocate. He is also a Vietnam era veteran, and former Professor of Psychology and Literature at the University of Maryland.

In addition, Lon is a widely published journalist and anthologized poet. He is a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow in Literature, and his works include "In Dogs We Trust", an anthology of inspirational canine stories by world-class writers. Currently he is composing a new book, entitled FETCH: Travels with Gander.
