Eurobike Electric Bike Business Seminars

At Eurobike, ETRA organises three morning seminars on three subjects which are very relevant to the electric bike business. We hope we will have the pleasure of welcoming you at our seminars.

Please register in advance.

- Wednesday 29th August: why and how bike dealers should enter the electric bicycle business
   (Jeroen Verbakel)
- Thursday 30th August: the new Directive on Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment now also
   includes electric bicycles (Jean-Pol Wiaux)
- Friday 31st August: UN rules on the transportation of Li-Ion Batteries (Tim Schaefer)

The 3 seminars take place in the administrative building on the 5th floor. For those who do not know where this building is, please read the following directions. When you arrive at the exhibition, you first pass a parking to your right, then you see the actual exhibition buildings, located a bit inwardly with a pond in front of them. You should pass all this and continue to the next (square) building on your right adjacent to the main road. This is the administrative building which also houses the press centre. You can enter this building without an entrance ticket.

For further details see below.

Jeroen VerbakelWednesday 29th August: Dutch (electric) bike dealer Jeroen Verbakel
on why and how bike dealers should enter the electric bike business

Many bicycle dealers throughout Europe are still in doubt as to whether they should enter the electric bicycle business. Too high an investment, no belief in the potential of electric bicycles, fear for the electric part, even the prejudice that electric bikes are not bicycles, ... there is no lack of excuses for not entering the electric bike business. In the meantime, electric bike sales in Europe are constantly and considerably growing. In the Netherlands, 1 out of 8 new bicycles sold is electric and the average value comes close to € 2,000.

Jeroen Verbakel and his brother Ed had a very successful bike business in The Netherlands, which they very recently sold to another Dutch bike dealer. Jeroen Verbakel firmly believes in electric bicycles as a result of which that segment has developed into a major part of his two shops. Recently, he organised an electric bike test-day and sold a record number.

Jeroen Verbakel will try to answer the following questions:

  • Why and how should a bike dealer decide whether to sell electric bicycles?
  • How should he adapt his business to the sales of electric bikes?
  • What it the effect of electric bike sales on the clientele of a bike business?
  • What is the effect on the business in terms of stock, profit margins, turnover …?
  • How to choose electric bike suppliers?
  • What is the potential of electric bikes?

This seminar is in the first place aimed at bike dealers who have not yet decided on entering the electric bike market but also at bike dealers who are already into the electric bike business. We are confident that Jeroen Verbakel's presentation will also be interesting for manufacturers, importers and distributors.

At this seminar, ETRA offers participants free breakfast.

The seminar takes place in the Administrative Building. This building is to the left of the main entrance (West). The Administrative Building also houses the press center.

JP WiauxThursday 30th August: new WEEE Directive now also includes electric bicycles

Very recently, the European Parliament and Council have adopted a revised Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). One of the new elements of this Directive is that the scope explictly includes all pedal assisted bicycle with assistance up to 25 km/h and 250W motor output.

The Directive imposes obligations on manufacturers, importers, distributors, dealers to collect and recycle  end-of-life electric bicycles.

Jean-Pol Wiaux is the Secretary General of Recharge, the international association for the promotion and management of portable rechargeable batteries through their life cycle. He will explain all the WEEE Directive elements that are relevant to the electric bike business. He will also clarify the link between the WEEE Directive and the Battery Directive, which already applies to the electric bike busines

This seminar offers vital information for all stakeholders in the electric bike busines: manufacturers, importers, distributors, dealers, ...

The seminar takes place in the Administrative Building. This building is to the left of the main entrance (West). The Administrative Building also houses the press center.

Tim SchferFriday 31st August: UN-rules on the transportation of batteries

There are very strict international rules set out by the United Nations for the transport of Li-Ion batteries. These rules apply to road, sea and air transport. They concern testing of the battery, packing and handling. If any company handles and packs dangerous goods at their own premises, a trained “Dangerous Goods Advisor” is required onsite to oversee that the goods are packed in the correct materials and to declare the goods safe to travel.

Tim Schaefer, Head of Strategic Coordination & Safety Advisor Dangerous Goods & IPM at Li-Tec Battery GmbH will explain the rules in detail and clarify the obligations of electric bicycle manufacturers, importers, dealers, ... for transporting Li-Ion batteries.

This seminar offers vital information for all stakeholders in the electric bike busines: manufacturers, importers, distributors, dealers, ...

The seminar takes place in the Administrative Building. This building is to the left of the main entrance (West). The Administrative Building also houses the press center.

Thank you for registering in advance if you wish to participate in our seminars. If you register for 1 or 2 seminars, please specify with your payment which seminars you will be attending.
