Raising Awareness around the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) and Child Sex Trafficking

Free New York City Showcase Event

This event is a showcase of Kourtney's Choice, which is the U.S. adaptation of an applied theater production (based on real-life case studies) that has proven highly effective in raising awareness around commercial sexual exploitation of children and child trafficking in the U.K. The play tells the story of a group of students who discover the diary of a girl named Kourtney. Kourtney is a young girl who had a falling out with her friends and family and was approached by a man named T.J.  T.J. was older, owns a car, has an apartment and treated her like an adult.  Unfortunately, T.J. was not what he seemed to be!  Kourtney's story is played out and examined by the students who, along with their teacher, attempt to understand what happened to Kourtney and how it could have been prevented.

The U.K. version has been seen by 340,000 young people (age 12+) and hundreds of professionals.  It has been highly effective at:

  • Raising awareness of child sexual exploitation and trafficking and the differring forms it can take.

  • Raising awareness of the grooming process.

  • Identifying risky situations.

  • Promoting safe Internet use.

  • Raising awareness of healthy relationships.

  • Providing information on relevant services.
