On the Street Where We Live -
A Case Study using the 1940 U.S. Census

with Michael Nolan, Julie Lagarde, and Marty Combs

Three current residents of the 200 Block of Elsie Street on Bernal Heights in San Francisco present their research on who lived on their block in 1940 and compare the data with neighbors on the block today, including –

  • How many people lived under one roof
  • What were their origins if they migrated or immigrated from elsewhere
  • What did they do for a living
  • How much did they earn and their length of employment
  • Vertical study of one house on the block over time
They discuss the role of research in binding the block together through frequent potluck dinners, mutual support in time of need, celebration in time of joy, and a stellar annual block party.

They describe how they brought their eldest current resident, Bernice Van Eckhardt, (97 on June 21) to the penthouse atop the Phelan Building where she and her late husband lived for 20 years and where Senator Phelan entertained celebrities in the 1920’s.  Several years ago, they found the great-granddaughter of a former resident of the block living nearby in Pacifica and built a special event around her visit to her ancestor’s home.
