Climate Literacy: Science, Solutions and Meaningful Watershed Education Experiences (MWEE) - Session 1

Please join the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office (NCBO), Stroud Water Research Center, and Chesapeake Bay Foundation in a professional learning opportunity for nonformal and informal educators designed to support our understanding of the changing climate's impact on Pennsylvania and develop ideas for integrating climate topics within education programming.

Climate change is one of the most important environmental issues of our time, with overwhelming trends illustrating this change and wide-ranging impacts on society and the environment from the melting of ice sheets to, sea level rise, ecosystem changes, alterations in ocean chemistry, and global water supplies.  Communities across the United States are already facing the impacts of a changing climate and Pennsylvania is no exception.

Non-Formal and In-Formal educators, as trusted messengers, play a critical role in supporting students’, teachers’ and the publics’ understanding of how climate change is influencing the human and natural systems around us, an understanding that can inform decision making as well as how we respond to the changing climate.

This 2-part workshop (January 31 and March 7) will convene regional science and policy leaders, as well as fellow educators in an collaborative learning opportunity designed to explore the science and solutions around climate change and consider how climate topics are and can be integrated within educational programming.

NOTE: We strongly encourage participants to attend both sessions however we understand that schedules can be tight so please don't let your ability to attend only one workshop session prevent you from registering.

During this workshop participants will:

  1. Develop awareness/understanding of key aspects of locally relevant climate science;

  2. Gain access to resources for teaching about climate change;

  3. Experience hands-on activities for exploring issues related to climate change; and

  4. Explore opportunities for stewardship actions that can address the causes and consequences of a changing climate.
