Driving Directions 

Depression is common in teens, with serious consequences for well-being ,health, and future development. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in young people. Clinicians working with youth must be prepared to identify signs of and effectively manage depression and suicide risk. The program will shed light on the scope of the problem of youth depression and suicide, describe etiological theories of each, as well as present evidence-based methods of identifying, assessing, and managing them.

Workshop Objectives

At the end of this activity the learner will be able to:
• Describe recent trends of youth depression and suicide
• Explain the theories of what underlies depression and suicide risk
• Name tools for identifying, assessing, and managing depression andsuicide risk

Presenter: Eric Lewandowski, Ph.D., is Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health and Founder & Clinical Director of the NYU/Bellevue Pediatric Depression and Suicide Initiative. Dr. Lewandowski earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University and his undergraduate degree in Psychology from McGill University. His current research interest and activity focuses on optimizing effectiveness of psychotherapy treatment for adolescent depression and suicide risk management in real-world clinical settings. Lewandowski has given presentations to American Academy of Child Psychiatry, the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and the World Congress of Psychiatry. His work has been published in JAMA Pediatrics, Global Mental Health, the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, etc.

Continuing Education Credits 

Three continuing education credits will be offered for PA Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Psychologists, NBCC Counselors, and educators under Act 48.

NBCC: Foundations Community Partnership (FCP) is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.

Psychologists: Foundations Community Partnership is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education to psychologists. FCP main- tains responsibility for this program and content.

PA Social Workers: PA State Board accepts APA and NBCC approval for SW, MFT, and LPC.

Educators: Application has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for three Act 48 Continuing Education Credits.
