Yoga for Addiction Recovery

This class is designed for anyone who counsels people suffering from addiction, as well as for anyone working through an addiction of their own.

Holistic treatment for addiction is relatively new, but emerging evidence suggests that combining yoga with traditional twelve-step treatment programs may increase recovery rates.

In this class, you’ll learn how yoga can be a powerful ally in breaking addiction’s grip, enabling addicts to replace destructive habits with ones that replenish the body and spirit. We’ll explore the breath techniques and physical postures that quiet the mind, reduce anxiety, increase endorphins, and foster a sense of well-being.

You’ll hear how:

  • Yoga helped your presenter get and stay clean after a 13-year battle with drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.
  • A priest uses yoga to achieve a 60 percent success rate among the addicts he helps.
  • Facilities in New York, Massachusetts and Arizona are incorporating yoga into their curriculums and seeing promising results.

Instructor

Melisa Deane, E-RYT 500, owner of MaKa Movement

Melisa credits yoga for saving her life. She’s been clean for 14 years and teaching yoga for 12 of them. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Boston University and a master’s degree in global leadership from Hawaii Pacific University. She teaches yoga while raising her daughters in Towson, Md. As owner of MaKa Movement, she plans to expand the company’s outreach programs in 2014 to include bringing yoga into jails, rehabilitation centers and group homes. She offers a 200-hour yoga teacher training in yoga for health and fitness.
