Tuesday Night Lights community education classes are back at University UMC on Sept. 19 & 26 and Oct. 3, 10, 17 & 24. Cost is $20. Classes meet weekly on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 8 pm, and free childcare is available by reservation one week in advance.

Our Whole Lives – For Ages 35+ 
Our Whole Lives focuses on sexuality in connection with many other concepts such as relationships, love, family, and spirituality. Sexuality, with all it involves, is most positive, most affirming, and most wonderful when it is understood and approached as a creative and connective life force, rather than as a series of thoughts and actions isolated from other parts of human activity. Participants will explore these connections throughout the program. The class will be specifically for adults 35 years and older of all genders, sexual orientations and relationship statuses. This course will extend to 8:30 pm.

Nietzsche – Is God Dead?
It has been "hip" for 130 years to read Nietzsche — and perhaps his most famous three words remain: "God is Dead." Nietzsche wrote like a psychologist and a poet, and he was the inspiration for Carl Jung, Jordan Peterson, H.L. Mencken, Ayn Rand, Albert Camus, — as well as Jim Morrison — and the list goes on. The modern and postmodern discussion to deny God and to invent a private morality finds its way into the politics of individualism as well. Leaders from the left as well as the right have lauded this as their path to freedom. It's Nietzsche’s cry of pain that rings so true to so many modern and postmodern people. Was Nietzsche crying out for God — and even crying out for Christ — but could never find the sort of Church that matched his own image of Christ? This class will explore these questions and others as we sympathetically seek to gain what may be worthwhile from Nietzsche while examining some of the prevailing myths that he bought into.

Three Urgent Tasks for the Church
Walter Brueggemann, one of the most highly regarded Biblical scholars of our time, believes that the Old Testament is the key to life in the shadow of empire. Yes, the Old Testament! In this six week course, we'll work through his 2014 book, Reality, Grief, Hope: Three Urgent Prophetic Tasks. Brueggemann doesn't just talk about the prophets — he embodies the prophetic imagination and sets a course that challenges us to engage in prophetic ministry in our own situation. It's serious work. "The prophetic task," he writes, "in our time as in ancient time, summons the community of faith to make knowing and risky decisions between options of life or death."

 Centering Prayer
Contemplative prayer is God’s personal and unique gift to us and has been a part of our Christian heritage for centuries. If we are open to the gift of contemplation, it may profoundly affect our daily lives. Centering Prayer is a receptive method of silent prayer in which we experience God's presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop explains the gift of contemplative prayer and how it deepens our relationship with God. The method of Centering Prayer will be presented and time will be allowed for practice of the prayer in each class, with a goal of establishing a daily practice. All are welcome!
