Frequently Asked Questions

Can I only attend the workshop, or do I need to commit to all three steps?
After the workshop, you will have identified some potential charisms to further discern.  The follow-up discernment is essential. By registering for the workshop, there is no commitment to participate in the following two steps, but you will be encouraged to do so.

Is there a minimum age?
"The Catherine of Siena Institute does not authorize the use of the inventory for anyone under the age of 21. Studies done over the past 20 years of over 150,000 individuals having completed the inventory bears out that teen results are most often indicative of natural talents and desires, not actual spiritual gifts. There is also a cautionary note to be made: at this developmental stage, teens should be encouraged to experiment and explore vs hone in on a specific area. Vocational specialists affirm this approach: too narrow a focus too early can actually thwart the discernment of one's personal vocation." (www.siena.org/called-gifted)

Does a person need to be an "Intentional Disciple" to discern their charisms?
A person needs to be in a living relationship with Jesus Christ in order for charisms to manifest.  However, the "Called and Gifted" process may be a means for a person to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ and, thus, become an "Intentional Disciple."

Should a newly baptized person participate?
It is recommended that neophytes wait one year before engaging in the "Called & Gifted" discernment process.

What if I am unable to pay the registration fee?
It is suggested that you first check with your pastor to see if your parish may be able to provide financial assistance.  If this is not possible, then please contact Liz at the Diocese of Duluth.  We do not want anyone to be unable to participate due to financial reasons.

The Called & Gifted
Charism Discernment Process

Step One  is the Called & Gifted  Workshop, which lays the foundation for the beginning of discernment.

Step Two   After the workshop, this step includes a one hour gifts interview which helps you choose a potential charism to discern further.

Step Three  This step helps you begin discernment in the real world.  It will teach you how to:

  • develop charism experiments
  • evaluate your results
  • identify what barriers you may have placed in the way of using your charisms
Small groups will be held at the Cathredral and St. Benedicts from June 20 - August 8.

You can register here for a workshop
to be held on May 12 & 13 in Duluth.

** Please ensure you have your pastor's approval.
