Day-long, no cost training designed to provide insight into the expertise required by detectives and forensic interviewers in working with victims with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

Morning Session:  Forensic Interviewing of Crime Victims with Cognitive and/or Communication Disabilities

GOAL:  To increase attendees' understanding of the interaction and interviewing skills' expertise required when working with victims with intellectual and other developmental disabilities

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:  Participants will be able to:

1)  Describe the characteristics of individuals with intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, and those on the Autism Spectrum;

2)  List three principle interaction strategies experts should use with a victim with cognitive/communication disabilites to facilitate a positive interactional or interviewing outcome;

3)  List four interviewing techniques experts should use to facilitate fact finding when the victim has a cognitive and/or communication disability;

4)  State at least two advantages of having a familiarity with using alternative and augmentative commmunication technologies; and

5)  List three resources or strategies that exemplify the motto of "Building the Bridge to Competence" when facing new situations with individuals with developmental disabilities.

Afternoon Session:  Forensic Assessment of Consent to Sex Training (FACTS)

GOAL:  To learn the principles, ethics and practice experts should use to assess a person with developmental disabilities ability to consent to a specific sex act within the scope of a criminal investigation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:  Participants will be able to:

1)  Identify and explain the sexual rights of individuals in Colordao as pertains to individuals with disabilities;

2)  List at least three inappropriate uses of FACTS that may represent an invasion of privacy; and

3)  List the criteria experts should use for an appropriate investigation of consent that differs from that for individuals without developmental disabilities.
