Professor Moustapha Diack is an international leader in the area of Open Education Resources (OER) adoption and research. He is member of the MERLOT Faculty Development Board since the inception of the organization. He is the co-founder of the MERLOT Africa Network (MAN) and Chair of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Summit on Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$) and Quality Online Program.

The Southern University System in collaboration with the California State University System just lauched an online digital library for teaching and learning. Now SU faculty can use high quality content to design online courses covering all disciplines and free eTextbook to increase college access and success.

OPEN EDUCATION WORKSHOP

Course Overview:

This workshop is a 1/2-day course that provides participants with a clear understanding of Open Education Resources (OER), Creative Commons Licensing (CC) and the search and discovery of OER from international repositories and affordable learning solution portals. It focuses on search strategies that enable participants to discover multimedia learning resources and open textbook for online course design. Participants will develop OER collections and Teaching Portfolios using the MERLOT Content Builder.

Course Objectives:

By completing this course, learners will be able:

  1. Analyze best practices for finding and adopting open educational resources for their respective disciplines
  2. Critically discuss the foundation of Creative Commons (CC) Licensing
  3. Distinguish the difference types of CC licenses
  4. Create a collection of OER for teaching and learning
  5. Contribute to an international repository of OER, MERLOT
  6. Create an online course portfolio showcase using the MERLOT Content Builder

Open Education Resources - Quality Matter Compilation

A Textbook Zero degree - Tidewater Community College will launch a pilot project this fall aimed at easing the pain of soaring textbook costs for college students.

Southern University lauched an online digital library for teaching and learning. Now SU faculty can use high quality content to design online courses covering all disciplines and free eTextbook to increase college access and success.

Leveraging MERLOT - We compiled excellent resources showcasing the MERLOT (Multimedia Education Resources for Learning and Online Teaching) collection of OER. This is contributed by the Southern University COLP.

MERLOT Content Builder - MERLOT is releasing a new interface design for its popular Web development tool, Content Builder. Originally built and supported by the Carnegie Foundation

The Open Educational Resources (OER) Degree Initiative seeks to boost college access and completion, particularly for underserved students, by engaging faculty in the redesign of courses and degree programs through the replacement of proprietary textbooks with open educational resources.

Dr. Veronica Douglas McEachin, is a highly motivated and energetic individual, who has successfully conducted technological workshops for individuals at all levels.  She currently serves as the Director of E-Learning at Southern University, Shreveport. Dr. McEachin has provided leadership developing; Web-Enhance, Online, and Hybrid courses using Open Educational for over 20 years.  Her extensive background includes Director of Academic Information Technology, Chair of the Division of Natural and Computation Sciences, Interim Director of Sponsored Programs, Assistant Professor in Computer Science, Computer Programmer Analyst and Data Processing Analyst.

Dr. Kim F. Beaton

 
Assistant Dean of Instruction for Feather River College

Kim F. Beaton is currently the Assistant Dean of Instruction for Feather River College, where she provides leadership for and management in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of various instructional and student support efforts.  Kim Beaton was also an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and General Counsel at Wiley College.  Prior to this, Kim Beaton was the Criminal Justice Program Director at Carrington College, Pleasant Hill, CA. As the Program Director for a newly established criminal justice department, Kim Beaton developed and implemented the entire criminal justice curriculum. She was responsible for developing Online Courses in Criminal Justice  at Wiley College using Open Educational Resources.
