This workshop will explore the depths of yoga for the dancer -- from a whole-body consciousness. Through an immersive flow of gentle asana and body work, we will tap into a state of deep relaxation and release -- allowing us to delve into both the energetic and anatomical origins of motion. From this whole-body perspective, we will easefully unfold new layers of kinesthetic awareness and movement clarity. In this way, a natural bridge is formed to carry these discoveries into our individual dance practices.

You do not need previous yoga experience to participate.  In addition to bringing your mat, you may want to bring some towels for extra cushioning/propping, and a notebook to take notes for future reference for your own practice.  Teacher Jessica Thomas will introduce concepts and principles as they apply to your training/performance as a dancer.

Jessica Thomas is an independent movement artist and company member with Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth. With her roots already seeped in the ashtanga yoga tradition, she expanded her curiosities through the 300 RYT training course from Dallas Yoga Center in 2011. The balanced integrity of yoga continues to nourish and inspire her own dance practices, as well as ignite endless explorations into the vast, healing subtleties of motion itself-- allowing the space for “new” creations to unfold.  Ms. Thomas is a graduate from the University of North Texas with a BFA in Dance with an emphasis in performance.  While attending UNT, she was privileged to receive the Lucille-Murchison Dance Scholarship. Upon graduation she continued her studies in California and New York through scholarship intensives with the José Limón Dance Company and Backhaus Dance.  Jessica has been a member of the CD/FW company since 2009 and also performs with Satellite-Dance Collective.

FRIDAY MARCH 14, 2014 - "Self Expression Play Day"

2 special workshops with Leslie Duran Graves, artistic director of FireWalk Dance

$20 for "Dance Improvisational"

$25 for "Small is BIG" Choreography Workshop

OR $35 for BOTH

“Dance Improvisational” - 11 am to 1 pm

Leslie Duran Graves will lead this workshop emphasizing the elements of free movement both as a soloist and in relation to a group.  Whether you are new to improvisation or you’ve been improvising for years, this class is a great opportunity to “play” in a friendly, informal environment, allowing you the time and opportunity to step outside of your normal routine and discover new possibilities for movement exploration.  No matter what style of dance you have been studying, there are endless possibilities to explore.   Mr. Graves welcomes dancers of all styles to join in the fun.

“Small is BIG” Choreography Workshop - 2 pm to 5 pm

As dancers and choreographers we don't always have to rely on traditional stages to create/perform movement.  Choreographer Leslie Graves will lead this workshop with a focus on creating engaging dances in restricted spaces...  Whether you find yourself at home trying to choreograph around the coffee table, trying to finish a choreography assignment in your dorm room, or you can’t resist doing tendus/pirouettes in the elevator at work when no one else is there...  Whether you’re wanting to learn more about choreography, or you’re just looking for ways to insert more DANCING into your daily life, this workshop will encourage you to find new ways to explore and experience performing and dance-making.   Whether you’ve never choreographed a dance in your life, or you’re an old “pro” at stringing together movement, taking the time to explore possibilities in an informal setting is a great way to stir up some creative juices.  Mr. Graves is known for his warmth, sense of humor, and boundless creativity, and he welcomes dancers of all styles to join in the fun.

Leslie Duran Graves started dancing later in life and studied dance at University of North Texas. Formed Firewalk Dance company in 2010, works include Glimpse, The Small Stage Space Series, My Key's Don't Fit That Door, and Leaves Fall.   He has been a frequent guest artist with Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth for the last 2 seasons.  Past experience includes Intern for Technical Production at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in 2006; original cast member of Shelley Cushman's "En I Me" performed at American College Dance Festival (ACDFA) and National College Dance Festival; selected to performed his solo "Duet" in the informal performances at ACDFA as a representative of UNT.  He dabbles in a lot of things, dancing, singing, sewing, metal smith, and photography. He is inspired by nature and everyday life.

CD/FW's 2013-2014 season is sponsored in part by the Arts Council of Fort Worth and their Neighborhood Arts Program in collaboration with the City of Fort Worth and the Texas Commission on the Arts (in association with the National Endowment for the Arts).  Additional partners include:  Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Arts Fifth Avenue, The Body Garage, TCU School for Classical & Contemporary Dance, and Texas Ballet Theater.
