Bias in the Mirror: Exploring Bias in Mental Healthcare
Presented by Dr. Javeed Sukhera MD, PHD, FRCPC
Bias is everywhere. Explicit biases include conscious attitudes or intentional discrimination towards certain groups. In contrast, implicit biases include attitudes or behaviours that that exert powerful influence over individuals outside their awareness. These implicit biases can perpetuate health disparities by widening inequities and decreasing trust between patients and health professionals. Despite the widespread discourse about implicit bias in healthcare, many are questioning if implicit bias training is a solution or may create unintended consequences.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Discuss the concept of implicit bias and its relevance to health professionals.
(2) Describe a model for bias recognition and management that has been empirically derived through research.
(3) Identify ways to co-create systemic change to advance equity and address injustice for vulnerable, marginalized, and stigmatized patient groups.

About Dr. Javeed Sukhera:
Dr. Javeed Sukhera is the Chair of Psychiatry at the Institute of Living and Chief of Psychiatry at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. Sukhera comes to Hartford HealthCare from Western University in London, Ontario, Canada where he held various clinical and academic leadership roles. He graduated from the University of Toronto and Ben-Gurion University and completed his residency and child/adolescent fellowship training at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. He completed his PhD in Health Professions Education from Maastricht University. He is an internationally recognized health professions education researcher. His research program explores novel approaches to addressing stigma and bias among health professionals and he has also been involved in advocacy and cross-sectoral work in education, policing, and community services.
