Healthy Active Living During A Pandemic

Presented by: Dr. Michelle Ponti, Dr. Linda Plowright, Justin Temple and Evonne Sullivan

Screen Time  Presented by Dr. Michelle Ponti

The Canadian Pediatric Society is planning the release of an update to the 2017 position statement on screen time among young children, with added research on pandemic effects. The CPS has also published guidelines focused on school-aged children and adolescents, a group whose growing independence and increased time spent without parental supervision requires a distinct approach to managing digital devices. Studies show that despite widespread use of “social” media, children in this age group are showing signs of increased isolation. School-aged children and adolescents also have increased rates of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and suicide. The statement is expected to provide an overview of the risks and potential benefits of digital media, with recommendations to help clinicians counsel parents and patients.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe how the pandemic impacted on child and adolescent screen time and review the CPS guidelines on screen use.
  2. Analyze the impacts of sedentary behaviour on mental health

About Dr. Michelle Ponti:

Dr. Ponti is a Paediatrician in London, Ontario.  She works at the Child and Parent Resource Institute (CPRI) a children's mental/developmental health facility. Her practice focuses on children with complex behavioural, developmental and learning issues.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Analyze the link between the health of our bodies and the health of our mind
  2. Analyze the growing evidence of an inflammatory component in the development and maintenance of mental illness
  3. List foods and dietary patterns that have mental health-promoting properties
