We are pleased to announce the 2021 Summer Virtual Workshops will be held Monday, June 14, and Tuesday, June 15. This event will be held exclusively online.
Presented by the CCC Information Security Center and Accessibility Center, this twice-annual event is packed with information and techniques you can apply to your professional role. Workshop information is geared toward:
- IT administrators, managers and specialists
- IT procurement
- Disability services directors and staff
- Faculty training and support
- IT accessibility specialists

9:00 - 9:05 am: Welcome
9:05 - 9:50 am: Cyber Hygiene - Aamir Khan
Cyber hygiene refers to the practices that system administrators and end users can take to improve the integrity of personal information within their organization or in their personal lives.
Newsworthy cybersecurity events involving government institutions such as ransomware and data breaches have become commonplace over the past few years, resulting in billions of dollars lost. In this presentation, Aamir Khan, Chief Information Security Officer with the CCC Information Security Center, will go over tips and best practices that any organization or individual can utilize to improve their cyber hygiene posture.
10:00 - 10:50 am: Tour of the Dark Web - Stephen Heath
The terms "Darknets" and "Darkweb" frequently make headlines, but what exactly do these terms mean? How does it work? Can you really find *anything* in the seedy underbelly of the internet? How anonymous is the Darknet? How much of the Darknet is just urban legends of our time? More importantly, how can we stop this activity in our networks?
Join Stephen Heath, IT Security Consultant with the CCC Chancellor's Office, on a deep dive of the Darknets, in which you will gain a glimpse in the wretched hive of scum and villainy where everything from prescription drugs, PHI, ransomware, credit cards, and even organs are rumored to be bought and sold.
11:00 - 11:50 am: OSINT - Omer Usmani
OSINT, or open source intelligence, is a framework for gathering data from publicly available sources. Malicious actors use the methodology to gain access to confidential information, or use the information to carry out a social engineering attack.
It is important for organizations to know how to conduct OSINT on themselves to know what kind of information is out there. Omer Usmani, Security Analyst with the CCC Information Security Center, will go over some popular OSINT tools and techniques including Google Dorking, Shodan, and SpiderFoot.

12:30 - 1:15 pm: Windows Security Center/Microsoft Cloud App Security - Dan Rojas
In this presentation, Dan Rojas, Information Security Officer at Santa Monica College, will cover how to setup Microsoft Cloud App Security to monitor Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Azure and Office 365 security assets and cyberthreats.
1:20 - 2:00 pm: Azure AD Security - Larry Suto
The Informaton Security Center's Larry Suto will discuss security features and issues in a typical Azure AD deployment. We will explore how attackers exploit Azure AD security weaknesses and best practices for hardening Azure AD implementation.
2:05 - 2:55 pm: Ransomware Prevention and Response - Larry Suto
This talk will go over proven techniques for reducing the risk of a major impact from a ransomware attack. Configuration best practices, incident response tactics and promising new anti-ransomware technologies will be reviewed.
3:00 - 3:05: Wrap-up
The CCC Information Security Center is funded under the Shared Infrastructure Program grant by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office in order to provide information security services, training and technical assistance free of charge to all community colleges, statewide.
Workshop Agenda: Accessibility, June 15
Need accessible output from Google Workspace? Grackle solves that. The Grackle tool will be demonstrated by its founder, including how to publish accessible Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. To date, over 30 colleges, universities and schools in California are using this tool for greater inclusiveness and equity for the blind and visually impaired. Questions are welcome.
PDF accessibility continues to be a challenge for colleges and institutions, as PDFs are popular but can be difficult to make accessible. Accessibility specialists must have the appropriate software applications for document remediation. This session, we will demonstrate different techniques for applying accessibility to PDFs using Adobe Acrobat Pro DC. The demo will include common features like reviewing the tags panel, using the reading order tool, the make accessible action wizard, and other Section 508 considerations specifically for PDFs.
Web accessibility can sometimes feel complicated or difficult, but it doesn't have to be. In this session we will explore practical things anyone can do to significantly improve the accessibility of a webpage, and strategies for scaling that to hundreds or thousands of web pages across many websites. We will review how WAVE and Pope Tech can be leveraged as part of these strategies including live demonstrations on how to use both.
Have an instructional video you’ve created? Video can be a powerful medium by which to communicate information, explain ideas, and demonstrate concepts. Ensuring that video and audio media is accessible to students and individuals with disabilities is necessary to not only meet accessibility requirements but to engage and reach all members of the campus community. Including accessibility practices into video media can also benefit non-native speakers, multimodal learners, or when viewing content in noisy areas.
This session will cover using Section 508 tools to build a more inclusive campus, including considerations for:
- Who and what does it apply to?
- What you can do immediately!
- Future resources to make it all happen.
Learn how this California community college went from having no established institutional guidelines for accessibility to adopting the CCC Accessibility Standard and incorporating new processes for software procurement and accessibility tools. The effort began with one part-time staff member who saw a need and spearheaded a cross-functional effort that went all the way to the top of the organization.
Accessibility is required by law, but can be elusive in practice. In this session, we’ll review the essential criteria outlined in the CVC-OEI Course Design Rubric for ensuring Canvas items - Pages, Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes and Announcements - are accessible. We’ll take a look at the 10-Day Accessibility Challenge, a series of self-paced video micro lessons that reinforce the legal requirements behind the CVC criteria, the pedagogy support building accessible content, and the technical skills instructors need to ensure their content meets the requirements. Participants will be provided access to materials they can adopt and adapt to create their own campus 10-Day Accessibility Challenge.
