Theatre & Conversation: An Evening of Kafka  

Alliance for New Music-Theatre in partnership with The President Woodrow Wilson House continues its year-long inaugural series of lively cultural evenings with a performance of Franz Kafka’s riveting short story A Report to an Academy, exploring the struggle to be human in a broken, oppressive society.

In this solo theater piece, Drew Valins embodies Kafka's half-ape RotPeter, telling his story of how he joined the human community after being captured and caged. 

Following the performance, join us in a discussion with the cast to further explore themes that still resonate widely in our culture.

Drew Valins, native of Tampa, FL, has worked on the New York stage for eleven years in productions ranging from classical to contemporary to commedia and clown. Drew has been an Alliance company member since he portrayed Václav Havel’s alter ego, the dissident playwright Ferdinand Vank in two works, Unveiling and a new music-theatre work by Maurice Saylor and Susan Galbraith, Vank Unleashed, both of which were performed in DC as part of the Czech Embassy’s 2013-14 Mutual Inspiration Festival and at the 2014 Prague Fringe Festival. Most recently Drew starred in Alliance for New Music-Theatre’s production of Václav Havel’s play Protest that was performed at the Czech Ambassador’s residence, the Czech Center in NYC and the Woodrow Wilson House.

His ongoing solo project, Franz Fragments, in which he theatrically probes the many works of Franz Kafka, has appeared on numerous stages. In collaboration with the Embassy of the Czech Republic and as part of the Mutual Inspirations Festival 2014 - Franz Kafka, Drew, in a stunning adaptation, brought to life Kafka’s riveting short story, A Report to an Academy, in which he plays a serious and passionate humanized ape.
