Origins of Modern Dance Salon
Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company

November 9, 2019, 2pm - 4pm

The President Woodrow Wilson House presents the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company (DTSBDC) in a contemporary-style dance salon exploring how modern dance rose to prominence in the U.S. in the post WWI era.

The 50-minute salon is an ode to the traditional dance performances held in patron’s homes during the early 20th century. Company founder Dana Tai Soon Burgess will intersperse dances with stories of how early dance pioneers such as Isadora Duncan, “The Mother of Modern Dance,” and Michio It, the first Asian-American choreographer, navigated their way through the tumultuous field of dance to branch away from traditional standards to design a new movement.

Members of DTSBDC will perform eight selections from Burgess’ and It’s repertoire to “help us have an experiential understanding of how modern dance was really shaping to be a voice of a new global order,” says Burgess.
