"The cost of receiving benefits is often a lifetime sentence to poverty and the ancillary effects of living in perpetual need." -- Len Statham, NYAPRS

Individuals who live at poverty-level throughout their lives experience a profound sense of powerlessness that affects their physical and emotional health, their self-esteem, and their intellectual and social wellness.  Sustainable employment offers individuals challenged by disabilities  a pathway out of poverty, yet only a small percentage of people with disabilities have access to integrated employment.

Innovative Practice Approaches in Challenging Times will challenge practitioners to develop new perspectives and practices in working with people with disabilities in their quests for meaningful career opportunities. Practitioners will acquire additional skills and discover new resources that will help to change  the employment landscape and help people on benefits begin to earn sustainable wages.

6.0 CE Credits Available for Licensed Social Workers (SW) and Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC) in New York State!

Courses Include:

The Process of Change, Taught by David Eckert, CRC, LMHC

Change is challenging for individuals and organizations. Discover how change affects individuals and their activities and discover tools for managing change in ways that enhance your skills as a practitioner, as an individual, and as a contributing member of your profession and your organization.

The True Cost of Poverty, Taught by Len Statham, CRC

Individuals who live at poverty-level throughout their lives experience a profound sense of powerlessness that affects their physical and emotional health, their self-esteem, and their intellectual and social wellness. Sustainable employment offers individuals with disabilities a pathway out of poverty. Practitioners will examine the deep implications of poverty and unemployment and develop new tools for supporting individuals with disabilities to attain meaningful jobs.

Training Within Industry (TWI), Taught by Scott Curtis and Robert Kocik of the Technology Development Organization

In this ground-breaking session, practitioners will learn an innovative approach to teaching individuals the skills they need to become fully-integrated members of the workforce. TWI offers a new lens through which to consider employment and skills training, an approach that focuses on skill development rather than disability.
