Sea Turtle Research & ASL Guided Programs

ASL Guided Programs are the first of their kind for Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC), a 501(c)(3) organization in south Florida.  These programs began in 2018 and include private tours of the facility, school field trips, night turtle walks, sunrise nest excavations and internships.  The goal of these programs is to provide Deaf communities an opportunity to learn about how to become better stewards in marine conservation, using sea turtles as a focal point.

Jennifer Reilly is the Research Operations Manager with the Research Laboratory at Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC), where they monitor a globally significant nesting beach for three endangered sea turtle species:  leatherback, loggerhead and green.  Because of the location in northern Palm Beach County, Florida they are on the front lines of changing climate and focus their research efforts on topics including human impacts, rising nest temperatures, sea level rise, and beach erosion.

Born and raised with an affinity for the ocean and to enrich her knowledge of the marine environment, Jennifer earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology with a Marine concentration from Southampton College of Long Island University, renamed Stony Brook Southampton.  After completing an internship assisting a Deaf graduate student with her thesis research in Hawaii where Jennifer encountered her very first sea turtle nesting on the beach, she decided to pursue her newfound passion in sea turtle biology and conservation by taking up on a few more intership and academic opportunities including returning to school for her Master of Arts degree in Marine Conservation and Policy from Stony Brook University.  Upon completion of her graduate studies, Jennifer was offered the position as a Nesting Field Technician at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center for three consecutive seasons before becoming full-time as Field Operations Assistant.  Jennifer is now the Research Operations Manager.  

With resounding support from both Research and Education departments, she has implemented ASL Guided Programs since 2018, the first of it's kind at LMC.
