OUR TIME 2017
In the wake of death, a suddenly grieving survivor often turns to a community of faith for help in figuring out how to navigate just the next few hours and days. When there aren’t any words to say, our faith gives us words and prayers to say. And when we ourselves are so overcome with our own grief that we can’t pray for ourselves, there is the steady, unwavering presence of the community that comes alongside us to pray on our behalf until we are able to pray again.
On March 3-5, Camp McDowell welcomes youth (6th-12th grades) and an adult caregiver that are healing from loss after the death of a oved one to spend a weekend in the care and comfort of a faith community. At Camp McDowell, the kids will do all of the things that kids always do at camp - hike, canoe, laugh, sing, dance, and - yes - have FUN! The adults will have time for rest, relaxation, and renewal. The youth and adult programs happen at the same time, in separate locations of Camp McDowell; on Sunday, everyone gathers together for a meal and celebration of life service.
All participants will have the opportunity to explore their grief in a community of others who have also lost someone. Small group work will be led by professional counselors trained in grief therapy. Creative outlets - such as planting and art projects - will give all ages a chance to express gief in healthy and healing ways. Having both youth and adult participation in this program is important as it gives a common language and points of reference going forward.
OUR TIME is a great opportunity for kids and adults who have experienced loss to step away from their regular routines and rest in the fellowship of others who grieve in a supportive and caring community in the natural beauty of what many call "God's Backyard".
