March 27th - Mental Health Services: Dispelling the Myths & Mysteries
This workshop will describe what really happens behind closed doors when mental health services are provided. Evaluations, therapeutic services, and follow-up appointments will be explained. The purpose of services will be offered as well as an illustration of the continuity of care from intake through discharge.
Learning Objectives:
An overview of common mood disorders (e.g., Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, etc.) will be provided during this workshop. Descriptions of symptoms and treatment options will be addressed. General statistics related to the prevalence of the disorder and the impact diagnoses can have on other areas of functioning will be covered.
Learning Objectives:
May 8th - The ABCs of Childhood Psychiatric Disorders
Much attention has been given to mental health disorders commonly diagnosed during childhood (e.g., ADHD, Autistic Disorder, Mental Retardation, etc.). This workshop will identify and explain the symptoms of common disorders diagnosed during childhood. Controversial debates related to diagnosis and treatment will be addressed. Treatment options will be explained. Prognosis for future development and functioning will also be explored.

About the Presenter: Allyse D. Sturdivant, Ph.D.
Dr. Sturdivant is a licensed clinical psychologist, who has worked with diverse populations in outpatient clinics, medical centers, community mental health agencies, school-based settings, and university-setting counseling centers. She is currently delivering psychological services to children, adolescents, and adults through The Chicago School Forensic Center. Dr. Sturdivant provides individual, couples, family, and group therapy.
Dr. Sturdivant's clinical work and community research has focused on cultural diversity and competence. She has taught classes on culture-related issues at Loyola University Chicago, the University of Illinois, and provided training and consultation to providers throughout the state of Illinois on providing culturally competent patient care. Dr. Sturdivant continues to teach and train in the area of cultural competence throughout the Chicagoland area.
In addition to her work in the area of cultural competence, Dr. Sturdivant is a certified ESL instructor. She received her Cambridge accredited Certification in English Language Teaching to adults (CELTA) from Teaching House, New York. Dr. Sturdivant has taught English Language Learners (ELL) for various countries. She has taught courses of varying levels in New York and in Costa Rica.
