Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
September 20, 2018

Goal:  To help participants develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities as Substance Use Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) screeners.

Summary and Objectives:
Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based practice used to identify, reduce and prevent problematic use, misuse and dependence on alcohol and illicit drugs. Participants will be provided with the information, skills, and tools needed to conduct SBIRT so that they can help at-risk drinkers and illicit drug users reduce their alcohol use to a safe amount or stop drinking and using. Using this effective intervention to reduce risky drinking and illicit drug use can help improve the health of individuals and communities by preventing the range of negative outcomes associated with excessive alcohol and illicit drug use: injuries and deaths, including from motor vehicle crashes; social problems, such as violence; physical and mental illnesses; and employment, relationships, and financial problems.

This course will teach participants how to:
• Administer screening
• Deliver a brief intervention
• Employ a motivational approach, and
• Make referrals to specialized treatment
