Pianist/composer Helen Sung has spent most of her life in two distinct worlds: a classical student from a young agewho transitioned to jazz in her early twenties, she understands the limitless range and potential of the piano in away that few specialists in either genre can. In addition, as the daughter of Chinese immigrants, Sung embodiestwo diverse cultures and has discovered a musical voice and identity that are true to both - and more importantly,true to herself.

Born and raised in Houston, TX, Helen studied classical piano and violin and attended Houston’s acclaimed HighSchool for the Performing & Visual Arts (HSPVA).

Continuing classical piano studies at the University of Texas atAustin, a chance meeting with jazz music caused an eventual course change: she went on to graduate from theThelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance (at the New England Conservatory) and win the Kennedy Center'sMary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition.

Now based in New York City, she has worked with such luminaries as the late Clark Terry, WayneShorter, Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis (who named her as one of his “Who’s Got Next: Jazz Musicians to Watch!”),MacArthur Fellow Regina Carter, and multiple Grammy-winners including Terri Lyne Carrington and Cecile McLorinSalvant. In 2017, the University of Texas College of Fine Arts awarded Sung its most prestigious honor – the E.William Doty Distinguished Alumna Award, and HSPVA inducted her into its Jazz Hall of Fame.
