Program Overview
Heavy drinking contributes to illnesses associated with each of the top three causes of death:
heart disease, cancer, and stroke. From 1992 to 2003, misuse of opioid prescription painkillers
increased by 140%. The prevalence of medical and psychiatric conditions is high among
individuals with alcohol and other drug disorders. Studies have suggested that medical services
may benefit substance abuse treatment outcomes if medical staff are knowledgeable about addiction
disorders and involved in treatment. This program offers psychiatrists and primary care
physicians and their teams information and skills necessary to serve patients with co-occurring
substance and alcohol abuse. Participants will learn from patients in recovery as well as expert
clinicians, and have ample opportunities for networking and informal case discussions. In
addition, APA Performance in Practice modules are available to support ABPN
Maintenance of Certification, and continual practice improvement.

Program Objectives Following attendance, participants will be able to:

• Describe current epidemiological findings for drug and alcohol addiction.
• Identify number, locations, and basic regulations around Opioid Treatment Programs in Minnesota.
• Describe pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of opioids.
• Assess opioid use in chronic pain.
• Access and use the PMP database.
• List effective approaches to help patients decide to go into treatment.
• Describe the spectrum of alcohol involvement.
• Discuss management of heavy drinking and alcohol use disorders.
• Describe effective techniques from the NIAAA Clinician’s Guide.
